Future Directions in Parity Violation From quarks to the cosmos

چکیده
I discuss the prospects for future studies of parity-violating (PV) interactions at low energies and the insights they might provide about open questions in the Standard Model as well as physics that lies beyond it. I cover four types of parity-violating observables: PV electron scattering; PV hadronic interactions; PV correlations in weak decays; and searches for the permanent electric dipole moments of

Parity-Violation With Electrons: Theoretical Perspectives
I review recent progress and developments in parity-violating electron scattering as it bears on three topics: strange quarks and hadron structure, electroweak radiative corrections, and physics beyond the Standard Model. I also discuss related developments in parity-conserving scattering with transversely polarized electrons as a probe of two-photon processes. I conclude with a perspective on ...
متن کاملWhy Do We Have Parity Violation?
We discuss here two of the questions posed at the beginning of the Bled 1998 workshop: Why is the weak charge dependent on handedness? Why do we have parity violation in the Standard Model? It is argued that the quarks and leptons must be protected from gaining a fundamental mass, very large compared to the electroweak scale, by gauge invariance and hence that their gauge charges must depend on...
متن کاملAtomic Parity Violation , Leptoquarks , and Contact Interactions
The recent measurement of atomic parity violation in cesium atoms shows a 2.3σ deviation from the standard model prediction. We show that such an effect can be explained by four-fermion contact interactions with specific chiralities or by scalar leptoquarks which couple to the left-handed quarks. For a coupling of electromagnetic strength, the leptoquark mass is inferred to be 1.1 to 1.3 TeV. W...
متن کاملParity Violation with Electrons and Hadrons
A key question in understanding the structure of nucleons involves the role of sea quarks in their ground state electromagnetic properties such as charge and magnetism. Parity-violating electron scattering, when combined with determination of nucleon electromagnetic form factors from parity-conserving e-N scattering, provides another degree of freedom to separately determine the up, down and st...
متن کاملTime-reversal and parity conservation for gravitating quarks
The complex mass term of a quark does not violate time-reversal or parity in gravitational interactions, in spite of an axial anomaly. Time-reversal is known to be violated in the weak interactions. Mass terms q̄LMqR + ̄̃qLM̃q̃R+hc are generated for quarks q having charge + 2 3 and quarks q̃ having charge − 1 3 in the shape of complex matrices M, M̃ from electroweak symmetry breaking. On diagonalizati...
